Interesting and different yarns and threads for knitting, crochet, needlepoint & embroidery in mostly natural fibres

Whilst we are specialists in yarn, especially wool, and natural fibre mixes, we also stock knitting accessories, fibres and kits for spinners and felters, needlepoint and embroidery supplies, haberdashery, threads and gifts. We also run short workshops and classes.

We sell mostly natural fibres, so we cater for baby knitters and sock knitters with wool/nylon and wool/acrylic mixes, as well as bamboo/wool mixes and 100% cottons from a variety of producers. Here are our main brands:

Ricamo 8 is a crochet cotton, which can also be used in machine embroidery.  It comes in 56 solid and variegated colours. Adriafil is an Italian yarn company which produces beautiful high quality yarns in an array of stunning colours in all thicknesses from 2-ply pure wool to wonderful mega-chunky yarns, and with eye-catching fancy yarns and mixed fibres too. Most yarns are spun in Adriafil’s own factory in Rimini. Here’s a video of their yarns being created: Adriafil yarns being made

Adriafil began as a small watermill over 100 years ago and has grown into a modern supplier of some of the best yarns available. Original and inspirational, this company is the preferred choice of many customers. The quality is outstanding and this is demonstrated by the loyalty of the customers who keep coming back for more. The standards are consistently high and year after year they release new styles, yarn blends, yarn ideas and patterns.

Appletons wool is dyed to 421 different shades, all of which are available in both tapestry and crewel weights. StitchUpp stocks all 421 shades in both tapestry and crewel skeins, and some shades in larger hanks.  The crewel work design (inset) by Tracy A Franklin, an embroideress and teacher based in Durham,  illustrates the variety of shades available .

For 180 years, the family firm of Appletons has been producing fine quality tapestry and crewel wool. Their reputation has been built up over generations by selecting the finest English wools from the wool markets in Bradford, Yorkshire, and having them spun in the UK. It is hardwearing, mothproofed and durable. Appletons is particularly proud to have been involved with the recent completion of the world famous Bayeux Tapestry as well as the Prestonpans tapestry and the ongoing Great Tapestry of Scotland.

StitchUpp stocks all 465 colours in Stranded Cotton, as well as the Light Effects, Colour Variations and Satin threads, and some colours in Cotton Pearl No. 5. For No. 8 thickness, we stock Adriafil Ricamo in 56 colours.

Since 1746 Dollfus-Mieg & Compagnie (better known as DMC), can be found wherever people are stitching and creating. Though much has changed, DMC has stayed true to its founding principle of creating the finest textiles in the world. DMC honours it’s heritage whilst innovating for the future. From the day the factory opened through to today, the employees continue to take great care in creating the finest thread in the world so that every project you work on can become exceptional. The factory remains where DMC’s story began, in Mulhouse, France. Though the company has grown into a global operation with products in over 125 countries, its roots in this French city remain stronger than ever.
